I \u00e4rlighetens namn, innan kriget k\u00e4nde jag inte ens igen de flesta av mina grannar, men under de senaste tv\u00e5 dagarna har vi alla blivit v\u00e4nner&#8221;, s\u00e4ger Anya.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hon minns krigets f\u00f6rsta \u00f6gonblick: &#8221;Det \u00e4r lika f\u00f6r alla. Jag hade aldrig i mitt liv f\u00f6rest\u00e4llt mig att en man en dag skulle v\u00e4cka mig mitt i natten och s\u00e4ga att kriget hade b\u00f6rjat.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hon och hennes man reagerade sakta och stannade kvar Kiev under de f\u00f6rsta timmarna. N\u00e4r de sedan v\u00e4gde f\u00f6r- och nackdelar best\u00e4mde de sig f\u00f6r att stanna p\u00e5 grund av sl\u00e4ktingar: en syster som fick barn f\u00f6r 10 dagar sedan och en gammal mormor som \u00e4r 90 \u00e5r.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221;Det \u00e4r inget heroiskt med att vi stannade. Vi f\u00f6rstod mycket v\u00e4l att om vi \u00e5ker kommer ingen att ta hand om v\u00e5ra sl\u00e4ktingar. Det \u00e4r v\u00e4rre f\u00f6r oss att inte vara med dem, att inte kunna hj\u00e4lpa &#8211; \u00e4n att vakna upp och somna till ljudet av explosioner och sirener.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Han s\u00e4ger att de vanligaste k\u00e4nslorna nu \u00e4r f\u00f6rtvivlan och hj\u00e4lpl\u00f6shet, men frivilligt arbete hj\u00e4lper till att hantera dem, \u00e5tminstone lite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Varje dag \u00e4r som en &#8221;groundhog day&#8221;. Hela familjen sover i korridoren och l\u00e4gger skorna utanf\u00f6r d\u00f6rren f\u00f6r att kunna springa ut snabbare, ifall det blir ett bombardemang. De vaknar, \u00e4ter och jobbar i k\u00f6ket. P\u00e5 kv\u00e4llen sl\u00e4cks alla lampor hemma och f\u00f6r f\u00f6rsta g\u00e5ngen under dagen l\u00e4ser de nyheterna: gl\u00e4ds \u00e5t sm\u00e5 segrar och k\u00e4nner stolthet \u00f6ver arm\u00e9n. Before the war, she was a manager of a popular restaurant in Kyiv. Now she organizes work in volunteer kitchens using the facilities of a restaurant.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No professional chefs work next to her, but neighbors who have decided to help.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018I have just texted in the chat of our house, where we usually solve household issues: we can open the kitchen and cook food for the military and hospitals. I did not expect so many people to answer the call. It turns out that a lot of people want to help the city; they just don\u2019t know how to. To be honest, before the war I did not even recognize most of my neighbors, and in the last two days we all became friends,\u2019 says Anya.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She recalls the first moments of the war: \u2018I was like everyone else. I never imagined in my life that one day someone would wake me up in the middle of the night and say that the war had started.\u2019<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She and her husband had not found their bearings and had not left Kyiv in the first few hours. And then, after they weighed the pros and cons, they decided to stay for the closest people that were there: a sister who gave birth to a child 10 days ago and an old grandmother who is 90 years old.<\/span>\r\n<blockquote><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018There is nothing heroic in our decision to stay. We just knew perfectly well that if we leave, no one will take care of our relatives. And it's worse for us not to be with them, not to be able to help than to wake up and fall asleep to the sounds of explosions and sirens.\u2019<\/span><\/blockquote>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anya says that now she feels mostly desperate and helpless but volunteering helps to cope with it, at least a bit.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every day is like a \u2018marmot day\u2019. The whole family sleeps in the hallway, putting their shoes outside the door to run out faster in case of a strike. They wake up, eat, and work in the kitchen. In the evening, at home, they turn all the lights off, and for the first time in a day, they read the news rejoicing in small victories and feeling proud of the army. They pray.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the war, Anya dreams of working a little less and spending more time with her family: \u2018This war has shown that you can lose everything in a moment. It turned out that before there were so many priceless things: the opportunity to hug those who you love at any time, there was so much light and joy.
